About this book

The principles of NLP. It is a delight for us to write about the fundamental elements of NLP. NLP is practical, it is about experience – your experience, what it is, not what it should be. NLP is not about telling you the ‘correct’ world view, but of enriching the view you have. We also want to write about NLP in a way that acknowledges the whole person, mind, body and spirit. This is a practical book: how NLP translates into your everyday life. Although well grounded in psychological theory and research, NLP is first and foremost about action. It gives you more choices in your mind and body, and so frees you to explore spirit.

NLP has a vision of a world in which there is no shortage of excellence and where education is about helping everyone to be outstanding, rather than just average. NLP is the psychology of excellence. You will find communications skills and techniques, and more in this book. We have attempted to give you the process that created the techniques, so you can take the ideas and make them your own in the way that suits youbest. NLP is a generative psychology.

This book is arranged around the basic operating principles, or presuppositions of NLP. They are called presuppositions because you presuppose them, that is, act as if they are true and notice the results you get. They are working hypotheses that may or may not be literally true. NLP does not claim they are true. The question to ask is not, ‘are they true?’, but, ‘are they useful?’
This book also serves as a short introduction to NLP and as such, we have faced an interesting challenge about what to include and what to leave out. We have aimed to give you the core of NLP, the concepts, thestructure and the practical uses.

We have also included examples from our own experience. NLP is like a hologram, all the parts connect to each other, so to deal fully with one part of it, we would need to deal with it all. You cannot, unfortunately read this book all at once. Faced with an Aladdin’s cave of possibilities, we have explored the main treasure trove, and a few fascinating passageways. For a more comprehensive map of Aladdin’s cave look in the resources section at the end of the book for suggestions on books, tapes and courses to explore further.
